Walking
down Hanover Street in Boston’s North End, one can see the sidewalks lined with
Italian men enjoying cigars, tourists eagerly following the Freedom Trail with
cameras in hand, storefronts and restaurants lined with menus and food products
and of course, the crowd that gathers outside of Mike’s Pastry.
Opened
in 1947, according to a 2012 CBS report, the bakery was the family business of
the late Michael Mercogliano. The small shop serves everything from cookies to
full sized cakes. However, cannoli’s are what patrons know the shop for best.
For
$3.50 you can pick up your very own Mike’s cannoli. There is a selection of 17
different flavors ranging from Oreo to hazelnut. These aren’t just little bite
sized pastries that you might find in your local Italian bakery. Mike’s
cannoli’s are thick and juicy at about four inches long. The chocolate chip one
specifically is light and fluffy like a cannoli should be and goes great with a
cup of coffee. The chocolate chips are the perfect addition for any chocolate
lover.
Speaking
of chocolate lovers, if you are one, you have to try the chocolate fudge
cupcake. It’s moist and thick with chocolate cake and fudge frosting. It is
fairly inexpensive (only costing a few dollars) and is accompanied nicely with
a tall glass of milk.
It
is no secret there are many other delicacies you can enjoy at Mike’s, but half
the reason it’s loyal patrons go back is because when you buy a Mike’s cookie,
you are investing in a legacy; a tradition of family and craftsmanship. It is
nice to see an original American business that prides itself on these ideals
and that is what you are taking home when you unwrap a blue and white box
stamped with the Mike’s Pastry logo.

This article is a descriptive preview as to what one can expect from making a trip to the famous Mike's Pastry. It makes me want to slip on a pair of leather, hand-mande shoes, dress up in a fitted suit, and smoke a fat cigar while walking to get my coffee and cannoli. My mouth is just watering from imagining that scrumptious oreo cannoli, with its "thick and juicy" crust just melting in my mouth. After you mentioned the "moist and thick" chocolate cupcake with fudge frosting, I was concerned that I would drown my computer because my mouth was watering so much. I definitely have to make a trip to Mike's soon!
